THE DAY THE STORY BEGAN

I was driving on the autobahn from Munich back to the Ruhr area when the news began coming through on the radio.

At first, nobody seemed to understand what was happening. Then came the reports from New York. I had no images in front of me — only the radio, the road and the growing sense that something unimaginable was taking place.

For a moment, it felt as though New York itself were falling.

I kept driving.

And somewhere on that journey, a question entered my mind: How can something so evil suddenly emerge? How can violence appear seemingly out of nowhere — and how much of what we believe we understand may actually be deception?

I began to write.

I stopped at motorway service stations along the route and, from one stop to the next, wrote the first draft of the screenplay that would later become ZUR HÖLLE MIT DIR.

September 11, 2001

The film itself is not about 9/11.

It is not a film about New York or the attacks.

But the emotional shock of that day became the spark for something else: a story about terror, concealment, manipulation and the uncertainty of knowing whom — or what — to believe.

That first version was only the beginning. In the months that followed, I returned to the screenplay, rewrote it and developed it further.

By the time we went into production, three screenplay drafts had shaped the final film.

Around a year and a half after that first drive from Munich, we began shooting the film. What had started as a spontaneous idea on the autobahn had become a fully developed cinema production.

By the time I reached home on that first day, the story had begun.

And without knowing it then, so had another journey.

The journey that would lead to my first film for the cinema.

ZUR HÖLLE MIT DIR was originally produced on Kodak motion-picture film, with traditional negative cutting and laboratory processing at ARRI.

The version currently presented here is sourced from a surviving DVD master and therefore does not represent the full image quality of the original theatrical material.

A new HD / 4K restoration and remastering is planned for 2027, subject to the recovery and condition of the best surviving source material.

Until then, this version is presented as part of the film’s history — and as the most complete version currently available to us.
